    Core Insights

    • Even though Robinhood's overall business has reached a historical high, its crypto business is declining. In Q2 2026, Robinhood's crypto revenue fell 38% year-on-year to $100 million, accounting for only 8% of the company's total revenue; retail crypto trading volume decreased by 36% year-on-year, and the share of crypto assets in total client assets under custody (AUC) also dropped to a historical low of just 7%.
    • Robinhood Chain is one of the strongest performing Layer 2 (L2) network launch cases recently. The chain generated $3.6 million in Real Economic Value (REV) in July, accounting for 38% of the revenue tracked by growthepie across all L2 networks, surpassing established networks including Polygon and Base.
    • The early activity of Robinhood Chain is driven not by Real World Assets (RWA), but by Meme coins. In July, Meme coins accounted for 51% of Robinhood Chain's spot trading volume, while RWA only made up 5%. Additionally, 48% of the trading volume from RWA came from liquidity pools composed of RWA and Meme coins.
    • Robinhood's clearest monetization opportunity lies not at the infrastructure level, but at the application level. Currently, the USDG stablecoin is generating approximately $10.5 million in annualized interest income; the case of Morpho also demonstrates the value of Robinhood's main application distribution capability. In contrast, the trading volume obtained solely through the integration of Robinhood Wallet accounts for only 0.2% of its total perpetual contract trading volume.
    • Currently, Robinhood Chain cannot significantly impact Robinhood's profits. The known annualized scale of revenue sources from Robinhood Chain is only about $54.8 million, equivalent to 14% of Robinhood's annualized crypto revenue. If Robinhood Chain wants to become an important business line, the company needs to expand the scale of USDG, commercialize traffic from the main application, or use the chain as an entry point for users to access higher-value products.

Introduction: Robinhood's Crypto Business is at a Crossroads

Perhaps no company represents the rise of retail investors better than Robinhood, which has become synonymous with retail investing, and its underlying business has thus experienced rapid development.

In Q2 2026, Robinhood's quarterly revenue reached $1.31 billion, a historical high, up 32% year-on-year and 92% compared to Q2 2024. This growth comes not only from its core stock and options trading business but also from an expanding product system. Today, Robinhood has 13 business lines with annualized revenues exceeding $100 million. In fact, in Q2 2026, all of Robinhood's trading-based revenue lines achieved double-digit year-on-year growth...

Except for one exception ------ the crypto business.

Once contributing over a third of Robinhood's revenue, the crypto business has now shrunk to a nearly negligible part. In Q2 2026, only 8% of Robinhood's total revenue came from the crypto business, the lowest level since Q3 2023.

The importance of the crypto business in Robinhood's revenue structure has significantly declined ------ even the event contracts (i.e., prediction markets) launched last year generated more revenue in Q2 than the crypto business:

    • Event contracts revenue: $156 million;
    • Crypto business revenue: $100 million;

This weakness is reflected not only in the declining revenue share but also in the core users of Robinhood losing interest in crypto assets. Although this trend is not unique to Robinhood, the extent of the decline is still shocking.

The most obvious manifestation comes from trading activity. In Q2 2026, retail crypto trading volume on the Robinhood App was only $18.2 billion, a 36% year-on-year decline, marking the lowest quarterly level since Q3 2024.

The decline is so significant that institutional trading volume on Bitstamp has surpassed retail trading volume on Robinhood for the first time, and the institutional activity trading volume during the same period was not strong either ------ Bitstamp's Q2 trading volume was $22.2 billion, its second-lowest quarterly performance in history.

Trading volume is not the only indicator showing the shrinkage of the crypto business. In Q1 2024, crypto assets under custody (AUC) were $26.2 billion, accounting for 20% of Robinhood's total AUC. More than two years later, crypto AUC has remained roughly flat at $26.3 billion, but its proportion of total AUC has dropped to just 7%, marking a historical low quarterly share.

Against this backdrop, Robinhood's crypto revenue has been severely impacted. In Q2, crypto revenue fell 38% year-on-year, and its share of total revenue declined by 53%. In short, Robinhood is growing overall, but the crypto business is not.

However, Robinhood has not retreated from the crypto space. On the contrary, it launched Robinhood Chain, its largest crypto bet to date. Robinhood is no longer almost entirely reliant on trading revenue but is trying to build a broader and more sustainable crypto business. The key question is, can Robinhood Chain make crypto a meaningful driver of growth for Robinhood again?

How Much Monetization Potential Does Robinhood Chain Have?

On July 1, 2026, Robinhood officially announced the launch of the Robinhood Chain mainnet at The World Is Flat event. This is a Layer-2 (L2) blockchain developed by Robinhood to power the company's growing on-chain ecosystem. Since its launch, Robinhood Chain has become one of the fastest launching blockchains recently.

In the first month after its launch, Robinhood Chain generated $3.6 million in Real Economic Value (REV). While it is still too early to determine whether this level of activity is sustainable, if we simply annualize the first month's data, Robinhood Chain's annualized REV is approximately $43.2 million.

This is a good starting point, but relying solely on this scale is still far from enough to reverse the trend of declining revenue in Robinhood's crypto business.

Even so, the launch performance of Robinhood Chain remains impressive. In July, Robinhood Chain ranked first in revenue among all L2 networks, surpassing many established networks that have been operating for years, such as Polygon ($2.7 million) and Base ($2.1 million).

According to data tracked by growthepie, Robinhood Chain currently accounts for 38% of the revenue of all L2 networks. In other words, Robinhood Chain is already the largest L2 in terms of chain revenue, but 62% of the market share still belongs to other networks. Even if the total revenue of L2 chains stagnates, Robinhood Chain can still achieve significant growth by capturing a larger market share.

However, the early success of Robinhood Chain has one important premise: most of the activity is attributed to Meme coins, which have historically been one of the biggest drivers of blockchain REV. Robinhood seems to accept this calmly, as founder Vlad Tenev has repeatedly expressed support for Memes.

Despite this, the extent to which meme coins drive activity on the Robinhood Chain is still quite astonishing. In July, the chain facilitated $6.93 billion in spot trading volume, of which $3.55 billion (51%) came from meme coins. In contrast, RWA—Robinhood Chain's claimed core use case—accounted for only $313.2 million, or 5% of the total trading volume.

Moreover, the direct share of meme coins in the trading volume on the Robinhood Chain may still underestimate their true impact on network activity. Take RWA as an example. One strategy promoted by the meme coin launch platform L()ng is to pair meme coins with tokenized stocks or ETFs in liquidity pools, thereby linking the price movements of meme coins to the underlying RWA. If the underlying RWA rises, say by 5%, the price of the meme coins would also increase by 5% (assuming no buying or selling activity). Therefore, a significant portion of the seemingly RWA trading volume is actually driven by meme coins. From July 6 to July 31, 48% of the RWA trading volume occurred in liquidity pools pairing meme coins with RWA.

While meme coins can effectively drive chain revenue growth, historically they have rarely become a stable long-term source of income. The activity of meme coins is highly volatile; Ethereum, Avalanche, TRON, and Base have all experienced their own speculative booms, but ultimately funds and users shifted to other networks. It remains uncertain whether Robinhood Chain will be able to retain this activity in the future. A month’s data is insufficient to prove that meme coins will become a sustainable source of REV for Robinhood Chain, or if they are merely another temporary stop in the flow of funds, eventually returning to Solana.

From a broader perspective, relying solely on Robinhood Chain's REV is unlikely to revitalize Robinhood's crypto business. Across the industry, network revenues are experiencing structural decline. First-generation smart contract platforms once relied on the scarcity of block space to generate significant fee income, but as block space becomes increasingly commoditized, new chains find it harder to generate substantial revenue from the infrastructure itself.

In July, the blockchain tracked by Blockworks generated $122.4 million in network revenue, marking the lowest monthly total in three and a half years. In contrast, network revenue in July 2025 was $333.7 million, a year-on-year decline of 63%. This deterioration cannot be simply attributed to market cycles. In July 2023, during the previous bear market, the chain still generated $300.1 million in network revenue.

As mentioned earlier, Robinhood has 13 business lines that have achieved at least $100 million in annualized revenue, making it hard to envision Robinhood Chain joining this ranks based solely on network revenue. Even if Robinhood Chain continues to capture a larger share of L2 activity, its chain revenue will ultimately hit a market ceiling of around $100 million in annualized revenue.

Breaking through this ceiling requires Robinhood to bring its existing user base onto the chain. However, since Robinhood's user base is primarily located in the United States, they are largely unable to access Robinhood Chain through the Robinhood app under the current regulatory environment, and this process may take time.

If Robinhood hopes for Robinhood Chain to become the next $100 million business line in the short term, the company needs to move beyond a purely network revenue model.

    Commercialization at the Application Layer

Value capture in the crypto industry is gradually shifting from the infrastructure layer to the application layer. Solana is a prime example.

At the beginning of Solana's recovery in January 2024, Solana applications generated $40.9 million in revenue, while the Solana network could generate $21.4 million in REV, with application revenue being approximately 1.9 times that of network revenue; in January 2025, at the peak of Solana's bull market, application revenue reached $1.13 billion, while Solana's REV was $551.7 million, maintaining a ratio of about 2 times; however, this gap further widened thereafter. By July 2026, for every $1 of revenue generated by Solana's ecosystem applications, the network itself could only obtain about $0.20.

In other words, the application layer is capturing an increasing amount of value, while the proportion of value obtained by the underlying blockchain is declining. If Robinhood hopes for Robinhood Chain to become the next $100 million business line, it must directly participate in the commercialization of on-chain applications. Although Robinhood has not officially announced this strategy, its early actions have pointed in this direction.

The most prominent case to date is Robinhood's stablecoin strategy. Unlike most blockchains that primarily rely on Circle's USDC or Tether's USDT, Robinhood has designated USDG as the native stablecoin of Robinhood Chain. This creates an additional revenue source for Robinhood—interest income generated from the underlying reserve assets of USDG. As of the end of July, the market capitalization of USDG on Robinhood Chain was $333.1 million. Assuming an underlying reserve yield of 3.5%, and that 90% of the related interest income belongs to Robinhood, USDG would generate an additional annualized income of about $10.5 million.

Robinhood should not find it difficult to further expand the supply of USDG, thereby creating a sustainable revenue stream. If the supply of USDG reaches $1 billion (a reasonable target, as 11 other blockchains have stablecoins with supplies of at least $1 billion), it would generate $31.5 million in annualized income, nearly equal to Robinhood Chain's current chain revenue.

Robinhood Chain also seems to be expanding its application layer beyond stablecoins. Lighter has launched its custom deployment of its Perp DEX on Robinhood Chain and will share trading fees with Robinhood 50/50. As part of the collaboration, Robinhood Wallet—a self-custody wallet independent of the main Robinhood app—will directly showcase Lighter's perpetual contracts within the app.

Additionally, it is rumored that Morpho has also paid Robinhood for integration within the Robinhood app. If true, this would represent a significant departure from traditional blockchain ecosystems' business models. In the past, blockchains typically paid incentives to applications to attract deployments, whereas Robinhood is attempting to reverse this, with applications paying fees to gain access to Robinhood's user distribution channels.

How Much is Robinhood's Distribution Capability Worth?

The feasibility of the entire application layer strategy ultimately depends on the value of Robinhood's distribution channels. If protocol parties are willing to pay to reach Robinhood users, then Robinhood can commercialize this traffic asset.

From the current cases, protocols on Robinhood Chain can primarily acquire users through two channels:

    • The main Robinhood app, such as Morpho;
    • The independent Robinhood Wallet, such as Lighter.

While the distribution capability of the main Robinhood app is well-known in the market, the value of distribution through Robinhood Wallet remains unclear.

Looking solely at the activity on Robinhood Chain, Robinhood Wallet users generated $119.6 million in trading volume in July. Daily trading volume peaked at $11 million on July 8, then declined to an average of $2.1 million in the last week of the month. The average number of active wallets for Robinhood Wallet in July was also just slightly below 7,000. This analysis did not apply witch attack filtering, so the actual number of independent users may be lower.

Compared to the broader wallet and trading application ecosystem on Robinhood Chain, Robinhood Wallet remains a relatively small player. The tracked wallets and trading applications generated a total of $3.08 billion in trading volume in July, with Robinhood Wallet accounting for $119.6 million, giving it a market share of less than 4%. However, the trading volume of these applications is primarily driven by heavy users. Robinhood Wallet ranked fourth in terms of average daily active wallets, despite ranking sixth in trading volume.

The integration of Lighter further demonstrates the limited value of distribution through Robinhood Wallet. Since its integration into Robinhood Wallet, Lighter's deployment on Robinhood has accounted for only 0.2% of its total perpetual contract trading volume. In July, this figure was $86.8 million, lower than the spot trading volume generated through Robinhood Wallet that month.

Perhaps more concerning is that Lighter is directly incentivizing perpetual contract trading through Robinhood Wallet, allocating 11 million LIT tokens currently valued at about $25 million. Even the limited trading volume at present is driven by these incentives, and without them, it might be even lower. At this point, it is difficult to conclude how much revenue can be generated solely from distribution through Robinhood Wallet.

While the distribution value provided by Robinhood Wallet may be limited, the main Robinhood application is entirely different. Morpho provides the clearest example, allowing Robinhood users to directly deposit stablecoins into Morpho through the main app and earn a 7% annualized return after incentives. By the end of July, the market deployed on Robinhood Chain accounted for 5% of Morpho's total deposits and nearly 6% of all loans. Within just one month of launch, Robinhood Chain has already become Morpho's third-largest TVL market.

It must be acknowledged that this portion of TVL is also incentivized. Even so, the differences between distribution through the Robinhood main app and Robinhood Wallet remain significant. Although not a perfect comparison, the share of the Robinhood Chain market in Morpho's total deposits is 25 times that of the share of the Robinhood deployment market in Lighter's total perpetual contract trading volume.

Therefore, the early conclusions about the distribution value of Robinhood are divided. For protocols that can secure direct integration into the main Robinhood application, the distribution value seems extremely high; however, relying solely on distribution through Robinhood Wallet is far less attractive. Unless Wallet integration can serve as a stepping stone to ultimately reach the main application, it is hard to understand why protocols would sacrifice meaningful economic benefits for it.

Admittedly, this conclusion is based on only two early cases. Robinhood has not formally established application-layer distribution trading as a broader strategy, nor is it clear how far the company intends to advance such collaborations. However, the observed differences to date are significant. The true value of Robinhood's distribution capability does not come from "association with the Robinhood brand" or "deployment on Robinhood Chain," but from the ability to directly reach users within the main Robinhood application.

Can Robinhood Chain Revive Crypto Business

This report begins with a core question—can Robinhood Chain make crypto a meaningful driver of growth for Robinhood again?

Early data paints a fairly clear picture. Robinhood Chain has achieved remarkable success as a blockchain, but it has yet to become a meaningful contributor to Robinhood's business. Robinhood's crypto revenue for the second quarter was $100 million, annualizing to about $400 million. In contrast, the known, quantifiable revenue streams associated with Robinhood Chain (chain REV, USDG interest income, Lighter fees shared by Robinhood) total only $54.8 million annually, about 14% of Robinhood's annualized crypto revenue. Admittedly, this comparison only annualizes the first month of Robinhood Chain's data and should not be mistaken for its long-term revenue potential.

Frankly, relying solely on network revenue, Robinhood Chain will never have a substantial impact on Robinhood. The block space has become overly commoditized, and the entire L2 revenue market is too small. If Robinhood Chain is to make crypto a meaningful driver of growth for Robinhood again, the company needs to monetize economic activities above the infrastructure layer.

Stablecoins provide the clearest path. Tether and Circle have already demonstrated how lucrative interest income generated from stablecoin reserves can be. At a 3.5% yield, every $1 billion in USDG supply would generate $35 million in annualized revenue for Robinhood (assuming it retains all related interest income). A supply of $10 billion would increase this figure to $350 million annually, nearly matching Robinhood's current annualized crypto revenue. This won't happen overnight, but given the scale and size of Robinhood's business, achieving this goal is not unimaginable.

Application distribution is another compelling opportunity. Robinhood has something that almost all other blockchains lack—direct access to a vast retail investor base. If on-chain protocols are willing to pay for access to these users or share revenue with Robinhood, the company could monetize its distribution capability rather than relying solely on fees generated by the chain itself. Early results indicate that this strategy is indeed effective when protocols are integrated into the main Robinhood application, even though the distribution through Robinhood Wallet itself is of little value.

There is also the possibility that Robinhood does not view Robinhood Chain as a standalone profit-making business. Instead, it may see this chain as a user entry and conversion channel. Robinhood Chain could serve as a funnel, introducing users to tokenized assets before leading them into the broader Robinhood ecosystem to trade stocks, options, crypto, and other products. In this model, the chain's value may not be reflected in network revenue but rather through higher engagement and revenue in other areas of Robinhood's business.

At present, the answer to the question posed at the beginning of this report is still "no." Robinhood Chain has not become a meaningful driver of growth for Robinhood, and relying solely on network revenue will never allow it to achieve this; to eventually change the answer to "yes," Robinhood needs to expand the scale of USDG or commercialize the user distribution capability of the main Robinhood application. Otherwise, Robinhood Chain is likely to have only indirect financial value, serving merely as a funnel for high-value products that have already driven Robinhood's business.
