gumi and SBI Launch Institutional Cryptocurrency Fund Starting in August
On the 28th, gumi announced that it has begun managing a cryptocurrency investment fund in collaboration with SBI Financial Services through its subsidiary.
Co-creation Fund for Institutional Investors
The newly established "SBI Crypto Fund I" will start operations on August 1. The fund has a scale of approximately 3 billion yen and is planned to operate for three years.
It will be offered as a private placement limited partnership aimed at professional institutional investors, not the general public.
Multiple institutional investors, including Daiwa Securities Group, are participating by providing funds. The main targets will be listed assets such as Bitcoin (BTC) and major altcoins.
The strategy will not be limited to mere holding; it will comprehensively utilize staking, rebalancing, and hedging strategies during price declines.
The fund will be operated by a joint company co-funded by SBI Financial Services and gumi's subsidiary, gC Labs. The investment ratio is 51% from SBI and 49% from gC Labs.
The two companies formed a capital and business partnership in 2022 and have been cooperating in node operations and the development of operational strategies. Previous internal tests have demonstrated performance exceeding Bitcoin's price fluctuations.
Strategy Aimed at Future ETF Approval
The establishment of this fund is a move in anticipation of the future approval of cryptocurrency ETFs in Japan. Globally, the expansion of decentralized finance (DeFi) and the approval of ETFs are rapidly growing the market size to levels of several tens of trillions of yen.
With the government's promotion of web3 policies and regulatory easing, there is a goal to accumulate operational performance and data in advance. The aim is to become a leading entity in market formation when legal frameworks are established.
Combining the strict compliance systems and asset management know-how of traditional financial institutions with the strengths of advanced cryptocurrency management.
The two parties will merge their insights to jointly create next-generation financial products. Collaborative research on portfolio strategies that optimally combine traditional assets and cryptocurrencies is also planned.
They will establish a system to safely respond to customers' new asset formation needs.
Currently, gumi is focusing on web3-related businesses alongside its entertainment business. The operation of this fund is positioned as an important part of the company's business strategy.
Through providing liquidity to advanced areas, they aim to serve as a bridge between the cryptocurrency market and Japanese companies.
It should be noted that this announcement is intended to inform about business activities and does not guarantee future operational performance.
