Samsung Electronics will start a stablecoin remittance service in the U.S. at the end of this month. The company has been working on integrating with digital asset exchanges, hiring personnel related to stablecoins, and applying for blockchain technology patents, and is now ready to launch the actual service.
According to Samsung Electronics' U.S. subsidiary, the company plans to provide the stablecoin feature of Samsung Wallet to eligible Galaxy users in the U.S. starting from the last week of October. The first supported asset will be USDC (USD Coin), which is pegged to the U.S. dollar. At the time of launch, approximately 82 million Samsung Wallet-compatible Galaxy devices in the U.S. are expected to be able to use this service. This service is also noteworthy as a testbed for expanding services using Galaxy devices worldwide.
Galaxy users in the U.S. will be able to send USDC without installing a separate digital asset wallet application or managing private keys. They can send funds to compatible digital asset wallets abroad and to bank accounts that meet requirements in over 60 countries.
However, Samsung does not directly issue USDC or hold customer assets. The operation of accounts, asset custody, and fund transfers will be handled by external partners subject to relevant regulations. Samsung will manage Samsung Wallet, the point of service for users, while actual financial and asset processing will be handled by external businesses.
Evolution of Digital Asset Features
This launch is significant as it expands the digital asset capabilities of Samsung Wallet beyond asset purchases and inquiries to actual remittances. Samsung has been laying the groundwork for related services by expanding integration with external exchanges. In the U.S. and Canada, Coinbase users have been supported in paying for digital asset purchases or funding their accounts using Samsung Pay. Samsung Wallet also provides functionality to link Coinbase and Gemini accounts to check held assets.
Previously, the focus was on connecting exchanges and users, but now the functionality to send and receive funds using stablecoins has been added to Samsung Wallet. The scope of use has expanded from trading assets on exchange accounts to actually transferring funds to recipients.
Samsung first revealed its plans to introduce stablecoins in July. During the 'Galaxy Unpacked 2026' event, they introduced plans for stablecoin support in Samsung Wallet. The demonstration screen featured USDC along with sending, receiving, and topping up functions. In August, they stated in a written response to Sandmark that they plan to sequentially introduce stablecoin account opening, remittance, and payment functions in Samsung Wallet, starting in some countries this year.
Samsung explained that they would expand services at an appropriate time, considering the regulations and market environments of each country. The remittance service starting in the U.S. at the end of this month can be seen as the first step in realizing this vision. However, this time the service will focus on remittance functions, and the introduction of account opening and payment functions mentioned earlier has not yet been specifically confirmed.
Strategic Preparations in Personnel and Patents
Samsung's business preparations are also evident in related job postings. Previously, Digital Asset reported that Samsung's U.S. subsidiary was recruiting a senior manager for Samsung Wallet payment business development, explicitly mentioning stablecoins as a collaboration target.
This role is responsible for establishing the vision and strategy for Samsung Wallet and executing business plans. Collaboration targets include card issuers, payment networks, fintech companies, and 'stablecoin'. This suggests that they have been preparing for partner discovery and commercialization beyond just technical reviews.
Samsung officials have also publicly mentioned related plans. Baek Won-seok, Group Leader of Samsung Wallet Global Payment, ID, and Blockchain, stated at Korea Blockchain Week (KBW) 2026 on the 1st that they are working to support stablecoins as a basic feature in Samsung Wallet. Chae Won-cheol, Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Mobile Experience (MX) Division Digital Wallet Team, also hinted at the ability to easily send digital dollars like USDC using Samsung Wallet at the TOKEN2049 event in Singapore.
Related patents have also been disclosed. On the 12th, Digital Asset confirmed that a technology for transferring NFT ownership filed by Samsung was disclosed in the U.S. on May 7. This technology involves transferring ownership of NFTs connected to electronic devices like smartphones from the manufacturer to the buyer and then to other users. When the user's wallet application transmits the blockchain wallet address and device identification information to the server, the server requests a change of ownership. This can be seen as a technology for managing the transfer of NFT ownership connected to devices using device identification information.
On July 23, a smart contract-based digital asset wallet technology was also disclosed in the U.S. It supports transactions without directly managing private keys and includes features for managing one wallet across multiple devices or changing and recovering transaction addresses.
However, it has not been confirmed whether these patents will be applied to the remittance service. The disclosure of patents only shows the fact of research and development, and does not serve as evidence that related functions have been adopted in commercial services.
Global Expansion, Regulatory Variables
The key question going forward is whether this service can lead to online and offline payments and expand beyond the U.S. Samsung has suggested the possibility of adding features for in-store payments using Galaxy devices in the future. However, the introduction of services in different countries may vary depending on the regulatory environment.
The timeline for domestic launch is also still unclear. Vice President Chae explained at the Singapore event that it is currently difficult to provide services in Korea due to the lack of relevant laws. This means that even if the service starts in the U.S., the same functions may not be available in Korea immediately. Regulations applicable to stablecoins and digital asset services differ by country, which may also affect the speed of business expansion.
The utility compared to existing remittance services is expected to be put to the test.
Joel Hugen Tobler, a virtual asset analyst at U.S. financial market research firm Javelin Strategy & Research, stated on the 8th in the payment-focused media Payments Journal that "considering the scale of Samsung, the potential is significant," but added that "whether it can provide a better user experience in terms of remittance and exchange fees, actual receipt amounts, and remittance speed compared to existing methods will be key to its spread."
