The traditional fixed term remains one of the main alternatives chosen by savers looking to obtain a return on their pesos without taking on significant risks. However, in August, the difference between the rates offered by banks can significantly modify the yield, even when the amount and duration of the investment are exactly the same.
The key is not only to decide whether to invest in a fixed term. It also matters where, how, and under what conditions it is established. For the same capital and the same period, the chosen entity can significantly change the final outcome.
At Banco Nación, with an investment of $1,500,000, the difference between the two available channels is significant. If the deposit is made at a branch with a TNA of 15.50%, the interest earned over 30 days is $19,109.59. At the end of the period, the saver receives $1,519,109.59.
If the same $1,500,000 is placed through the electronic channel with a TNA of 19%, the interest obtained reaches $23,424.66. In that case, the total amount at maturity would be $1,523,424.66.
The difference of $4,315.07 arises solely from the applied rate. There is no difference in the deposited amount or in the term: in both cases, it is $1,500,000 immobilized for 30 days. This account illustrates why comparing the conditions before establishing the investment is essential.
For August, the nominal annual rates (TNA) reported for traditional fixed terms of 30 days show significant differences among the main entities:
The Central Bank has an official comparator on its website that allows consulting the rates offered by entities for online deposits of 30 days. The information may vary depending on the bank, the channel used, and the conditions applied to clients or non-clients.
Before finalizing a fixed term, the first piece of information to check is the TNA, but it should not be the only one. It is also necessary to verify the contracting modality, the minimum term, the conditions to access the announced rate, and whether the percentage applies exclusively to clients of the entity.
The difference between branch and electronic channel at Banco Nación is a clear example. For $1,500,000, moving from a TNA of 15.50% to one of 19% generates $4,315.07 more in 30 days. The digital operation, moreover, can be carried out from home banking or the bank's application, without the need to go to a branch.
Another fundamental point is liquidity. In a traditional fixed term, the money remains immobilized until the maturity date. Therefore, it is not advisable to invest funds that may be needed before that period ends. The known profitability in advance has a downside: the impossibility of freely accessing the capital during those 30 days.
It is also important to differentiate between the TNA and the effective rate. The TNA serves as a reference for comparing tools, but it does not directly represent the profit from a 30-day placement. To know how much money is obtained at maturity, it is necessary to calculate the corresponding interest for the period.
Another important issue is inflation. Earning interest does not necessarily mean increasing purchasing power. If during the 30 days the price increase exceeds the yield obtained, the capital may grow in nominal terms but lose real value.
In the case of a person who has $1,500,000 available, the difference in rates may be enough to justify a comparison before investing. At Banco Nación, the decision between branch and electronic channel represents more than $4,000 in difference in just one month. If entities offering rates above 21% or 22% are also considered, the gap can be even greater.
