Cofund Maps Over 24 Bitcoin Covenant Use Cases
Cofund has released an interactive atlas compiling over 24 use cases of Bitcoin (BTC) covenants. This material is not an announcement of new features applied to BTC, but rather a map that visually presents the covenant designs that are still in the discussion phase.
Crypto Briefing reported that Cofund organized use cases such as vaults, Ark non-interactive issuance, payment pools, and non-coordinated mining pools through 'The Covenants Use-Case Atlas'. The atlas illustrates the relationships between each use case centered around proposals like CTV, OP_CAT, and CSFS.
Covenants are designs that limit how specific coins can be used in the future on Bitcoin. The Bitcoin Covenant Wiki describes this as 'transaction introspection', where Bitcoin scripts examine transaction details. Currently, the scope of what Bitcoin scripts can verify is limited to signatures, lock times, sequences, and more.
The crux of this discussion lies in the difference in maturity rather than the number of use cases. Crypto Briefing noted that the Cofund atlas has labeled each use case with status indicators such as 'operational code' or 'listed sketch'. This means it distinguishes between designs that have reached code level and those that remain at the conceptual stage, rather than providing a list of features that developers can immediately implement in products.
The primary proposal, CTV, is summarized in BIP 119. The Bitcoin.org document marks BIP 119 as 'Draft' and describes it as a spending restriction method that checks whether it matches a pre-defined transaction template. This is akin to restricting UTXOs to follow a predetermined transaction structure.
OP_CAT is marked as 'Complete' in the BIP 347 document. However, the document states that this feature will be activated through a soft fork, meaning that the document's status does not necessarily indicate mainnet activation. The current focus of both CTV and OP_CAT in this article is not on activation but on the discussion of designs and potential use cases.
The discussion around OP_CAT is not new. Bitcoin Optech summarizes that OP_CAT was originally an opcode in Bitcoin but was deactivated in 2010, and subsequent modified proposals have been re-discussed through soft forks. OP_CAT provides functionality to concatenate two values on the stack, thereby broadening the expressive range of Taproot designs.
Taproot has already been activated separately on Bitcoin. The BIP 341 document states that Taproot was activated at block 709632 on the BTC mainnet. However, the activation of Taproot and the mainnet activation of covenant proposals like CTV and OP_CAT are separate issues.
The vaults covered in this atlas are described as custodial structures that impose delays or conditions on the movement of funds. Payment pools are mentioned as a way for multiple participants to share on-chain space, while Ark is discussed alongside structures like non-interactive issuance. Non-coordinated mining pools are presented as design cases that reduce the coordination burden among mining participants.
Cofund introduces itself on its official site as an enterprise-grade multi-signature wallet. It also describes itself as a multi-signature wallet that stores BTC and handles multiple chains and assets. This atlas is more of an educational material aimed at understanding Bitcoin-based financial operations and programmable custodial structures rather than a simple product announcement from Cofund.
In discussions about improving the Bitcoin protocol, the activation process is as important as the content of new features. Earlier, it was reported that BIP-54 was presented as a consensus cleanup that does not address new script features and covenant surfaces. In contrast, this Covenant Atlas serves as a document that organizes the landscape of script expansion discussions.
The development community has been discussing the potential for custodial security, scalability, and improvements in payment structures concerning covenants. On the other hand, changes to Bitcoin consensus require participant agreement and implementation stability, making it difficult to proceed like a product roadmap in the short term. This is why operational codes and sketch stages are distinguished even within the same atlas.
Market reactions have not yet been widely confirmed. There was a positive mention on X regarding the covenant simulation study in February 2026, and Cointelegraph Research pointed out in an analysis on June 14, 2026, that Bitcoin covenants are gaining attention again. However, there is limited basis for interpreting this Cofund atlas itself as a price material or a change in adoption speed.
The significance of this material does not lie in the introduction of new features to BTC. The core point is that the discussion around Bitcoin covenants is being organized around concrete use cases such as vaults, payment pools, Ark, and mining pools, with the implementation stages of each proposal also being indicated.
