Bank of America Admits Money Laundering Failures, Stock Drops 9%
Bank of America stock fell 9% after the bank admitted to willful money laundering control failures and agreed to pay 1.21 billion dollars. The bank failed to report over 5 billion dollars in suspicious transactions on time, with more than 1 billion dollars linked to national security risks. The penalty reduced quarterly profit by 17 cents per share, and adjusted earnings of 1.08 dollars per share missed estimates. No criminal charges were filed against the bank, as the penalties were issued by civil regulators from three Treasury agencies. The Justice Department did not announce any criminal cases related to the bank's failures. In contrast, Binance founder Changpeng 'CZ' Zhao served four months in prison for his exchange's anti-money laundering failures, which included not filing suspicious activity reports and breaching US sanctions. The Justice Department's approach to corporate prosecutions has shifted since CZ's sentencing, with a focus on self-reporting and cooperation to avoid prosecution.
