The U.S. government's annualized interest costs have reached $1.2 trillion, surpassing defense spending. This increase is attributed to the rising costs of refinancing as low-interest bonds are replaced with new bonds at higher rates. Charles Schwab has analyzed that the U.S. has entered an era of high borrowing costs, with ongoing fiscal deficits and increasing interest expenses shrinking fiscal capacity. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projects that the federal deficit for the fiscal year 2026 will be $1.9 trillion, and it is expected to rise to $3.1 trillion by 2036. Interest costs are anticipated to increase from 3.3% of GDP in 2026 to 4.6% in 2036. This situation reduces the government's ability to respond to economic slowdowns or shocks in the financial markets, as a larger share of tax revenue will be used to service existing debt. Recently, the U.S. government paid the highest yield on 10-year Treasury bond auctions since 2007, and also recorded the highest yield on 30-year Treasury bond auctions since 2001. The U.S. debt debate is evolving to consider not only the total amount but also interest rates, maturity structures, and demand for Treasury bonds.
