Ukraine Attacks 17 Russian Oil Tankers and Two Gas Carriers in the Black Sea
On July 15, 2026, Ukrainian forces attacked Russian maritime logistics in the Black Sea, striking 17 oil tankers, two gas carriers, and one tugboat. This operation continues a series of strikes in the Sea of Azov aimed at blocking fuel exports financed by the Kremlin's military budget. Drone unit commander Robert Brovdi stated that "the first round of the naval battle is over" after more than 100 vessels linked to Russia were hit in the Sea of Azov. The Black Sea is a key route for exporting Russian oil, and any disruptions could significantly limit maritime supplies. In June, over 980,000 barrels of oil were shipped daily from the port of Novorossiysk, accounting for more than 20% of Russia's maritime oil exports. Following attacks on Russian ships in the Sea of Azov, Moscow suspended shipping through the Don-Donetsk Canal and closed the Kerch Strait. In response, Russia continues to attack Ukrainian ports, claiming damage to four vessels.
