Solana Reduces Target Slot Time to 250 Milliseconds
On September 18, Solana lowered its target slot time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds, marking the third acceleration since August. The computation and data capacity per slot has been proportionally reduced, and the overall network throughput has not increased. This adjustment is part of the third phase of the SIMD-0525 four-phase plan, with slot times decreasing from the initial 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds, then to 300 milliseconds, and now to 250 milliseconds. The final step to reduce it to 200 milliseconds has not yet determined a mainnet activation date, contingent on the validator block rate remaining stable.
