Smilyansky Denies NBU's Accusations of Money Laundering 11 Billion UAH
The CEO of Ukrposhta, Igor Smilyansky, has denied the National Bank's accusations regarding money laundering schemes within the company. He stated that it is impossible to launder money through a postal operator, as Ukrposhta is not a bank. Smilyansky noted that the NBU may or may not notice something, but there has been no laundering through Ukrposhta. He emphasized that the company cooperates with law enforcement and is ready to assist in the investigation. The NBU identified atypical operations and violations at Ukrposhta, suggesting that the company could have been part of a scheme to legalize over 11 billion UAH in cash. On June 23, the NBU deemed Smilyansky unfit for his position and ordered the company to suspend him. Smilyansky intends to defend his reputation in court, calling the NBU's decision a personal vendetta. The conflict between Smilyansky and NBU head Andriy Pyshny has been ongoing for several years. On March 17, the NBU fined Ukrposhta 255,000 UAH, which Smilyansky viewed as pressure on the company. He also stated that the NBU's demands limit the autonomy of supervisory bodies. Following this, the NBU questioned Smilyansky's professional competence.
