Russia Strikes 'Zaporizhstal' Again with Five Missiles
On the night of August 27, Russian forces attacked the Zaporizhstal metallurgical plant, launching five missiles. This site had already been struck on August 11, resulting in the deaths of seven workers. The plant was forced to halt operations, and the consequences of the strikes could be extremely serious. MP Musa Magomedov noted that Ukraine could be left without metallurgy until spring if the government does not take urgent measures. He also pointed to the blockade of the ports of Greater Odessa, which has led to a halt in production at the Southern Mining and Processing Plant and a potential 30% decrease in output from other Kryvyi Rih plants by the average annual level of 2025. Additionally, freight tariffs of Ukrzaliznytsia have increased by 30%, significantly raising the production costs for metallurgists. Magomedov also mentioned new European quotas that could reduce Ukrainian steel exports to the EU by 60% by 2025, resulting in a loss of about $1 billion in exports and over 17 billion hryvnias in budget revenues. He emphasized that the industry needs concrete solutions to avoid further losses.
