Russia Considers the Northern Sea Route for Grain Exports

The Russian government is seeking alternative routes for grain exports due to the blockade of ports in the Black and Azov Seas. The possibility of transporting agricultural products via the Northern Sea Route is being considered. Over 95% of Russia's agricultural export capacity has been halted. In August, three grain terminals in the port of Novorossiysk, which shipped about 25 million tons of grain annually, ceased operations due to drone attacks. The grain terminal in Taman is also non-operational, and shipping through the Kerch Strait is blocked. Only the port of Tuapse is operational, with a capacity of about 250,000 tons per month. Russian wheat exports in August fell to a 16-year low of 1.9 million tons, which is 2.3 times lower than the figures for August 2025. Experts consider the idea of redirecting to the Northern Sea Route unrealistic due to the limited capacity of the terminals. Oversaturation of the domestic market has led to a drop in grain prices and a shortage of working capital for farmers ahead of the autumn sowing campaign. Arkady Zlochevsky, head of the Russian Grain Union, noted that the surplus of supply has collapsed domestic prices and jeopardized the autumn sowing.
