OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, planning to provide cutting-edge models and research tools for free to 100,000 researchers by 2027. The first 10,000 participants will gain access this summer, with GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, ChatGPT Work, and Codex available at launch. Participants will receive increased Deep Research credits, higher usage limits, and longer context. The platform includes over 75 life sciences skills and can connect to paper repositories, public genome databases, and computational notebooks. Applicants must come from research-oriented universities selected by OpenAI and verify their school affiliation, ongoing projects, and scientific use. Once approved, they can invite up to four collaborators from the same institution, with data not being used for training by default.
