Jim Cramer Advises Against Selling Meta Amid Youth-Safety Trial
Jim Cramer advised investors to hold onto Meta Platforms (META) shares despite the ongoing youth-safety trial in Oakland, California, stating that the legal pressure is temporary and patience will be rewarded. Meta's stock has faced pressure throughout the year, closing at 559.02 dollars on Monday, with a market valuation of approximately 1.42 trillion dollars. The trial, initiated by 29 state attorneys general, began on August 18, with accusations that Meta designed Facebook and Instagram to be addictive for minors while downplaying associated dangers. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers will determine the outcome, as the jury's role is advisory. Claims related to infinite scroll and autoplay have already been dismissed. The states are challenging Meta's design under Section 230, which typically protects platforms from liability for user content. No state has requested the theoretical maximum of 1.4 trillion dollars in penalties, a figure Meta has sought to dismiss. California Attorney General Rob Bonta criticized Meta for promoting this number to make the case appear unreasonable. Bank of America maintains a Buy rating with a target price of 810 dollars, suggesting a potential upside of about 45%. In contrast, Mizuho expresses caution, likening the situation to the tobacco litigation of the 1990s. Despite Cramer's advice, 38 out of 43 analysts tracked by TipRanks rate Meta as a Buy, with a consensus target of 752.38 dollars, indicating a 34.59% upside from Monday's close.
