Google's Quantum Chip Achieves 99.99% Accuracy: What This Means for Bitcoin
Google's quantum chip has made a significant leap forward: the company has learned to perform one of the key operations of quantum computing with 99.99% accuracy, while simultaneously reducing the number of errors by 40 times. Brivael Le Pogam, co-founder and head of the AI startup Argil AI from the Y Combinator accelerator, called this figure one of the most significant numbers of the decade.
The main question for the crypto market is simple: does this result bring us closer to the moment when quantum computers could threaten Bitcoin and modern internet cryptography? The short answer is — not yet. But the development direction is already serious enough to attract the attention of not only engineers but also investors.
Why Quantum Computers Should Not Be Compared to Regular PCs
Classical computers work with bits: each of them takes a value of 0 or 1. Quantum machines use qubits, which can exist in a combination of two states simultaneously until measured. This allows computational power to grow non-linearly: adding each new qubit doubles the number of states the system can work with.
Modeling 50 qubits is already extremely difficult on a supercomputer. A system of 300 qubits could theoretically describe more states than there are atoms in the universe.
Moreover, a quantum computer is not a universally accelerated version of a regular laptop. It won't make Excel run faster and doesn't explore all possible answers simultaneously in a conventional sense. Its advantage is revealed in a narrow set of tasks, where the gap with classical approaches can be enormous.
- Molecule modeling: potentially helps in searching for new drugs, creating more efficient batteries, developing superconductors, and catalysts for capturing CO2.
- Optimization tasks: such computations are important for logistics, finance, and materials science.
- Cryptography: estimates suggest that just under a million physical qubits may be enough to break RSA-2048, which underpins a significant part of the modern internet.
Why 99.99% Accuracy is So Important
The main problem with quantum computing is the fragility of qubits. A calculation can be disrupted by vibration or a random cosmic particle, which is why Google cools its chips to nearly absolute zero. Additionally, individual operations sometimes fail.
To obtain one reliable qubit, engineers have to combine hundreds or thousands of unstable physical qubits. Currently, Google has about a hundred physical qubits, while millions are needed for practical tasks. The lower the error rate, the fewer resources are required to protect computations from failures.
This is why the 99.99% figure is important not just as an impressive number for presentations, but as a practical step towards creating more resilient quantum systems.
Is There a Threat to Bitcoin and Banking Encryption?
At this stage, Bitcoin and banking cryptography are not under immediate threat. Breaking them requires scales close to a million qubits, while Google has about a hundred. The company also points out that the new method still needs to be tested on larger systems.
However, the overall vector is already clear. The development of post-quantum encryption is in full swing, and discussions about future protection for Bitcoin have ceased to be an abstract theory. At some point, the question of updating cryptographic mechanisms will arise for every blockchain.

Why Quantum Computing is Important for AI Development
The connection between quantum technologies and artificial intelligence works in two directions. On one hand, AI is already helping to create quantum computers: Google's DeepMind AlphaQubit model detects qubit errors better than classical methods.
On the other hand, quantum machines can provide AI with a more accurate description of physical reality. The scenario looks like this: AI proposes millions of possible molecules, the quantum computer accurately calculates their properties, after which AI learns from the results and suggests more successful options.
Therefore, the main effect of quantum computing may not only benefit chip manufacturers. The most significant changes are expected in energy, materials science, and medicine — areas where AI already faces a lack of precise data. Over the past three years, acceleration has been particularly noticeable in software. If quantum systems reach a practical level, they could also accelerate research in the physical world.
How to Track Progress
One of the simplest benchmarks is the number of nines in the accuracy of operations. Each new nine reduces the number of qubits needed for a useful quantum machine and brings us closer to the moment when such computations can go beyond laboratory settings. We are still far from this stage, but Google's result shows that progress is already moving in the right direction.
