Changes for Cryptocurrency Owners in Russia from September 1, 2026

By: coinspot.io|2026/08/27 13:01:00

Starting from September 1, 2026, cryptocurrency owners in Russia will not be able to sell already purchased digital assets; however, ownership of these assets will not be prohibited. The main innovation is related to the emergence of regulated intermediaries, with qualified and unqualified investors facing different conditions. Unqualified investors will only be able to acquire liquid assets with a limit of 300,000 rubles per year from each intermediary. Qualified investors will not have limits on transaction volumes but must also undergo testing. Cryptocurrency will remain an investment instrument, but transactions will occur under clearer rules. Payment for goods and services with cryptocurrency in Russia will still be prohibited, except for certain foreign trade settlements. The transition to the new rules will be gradual, with a transitional period until July 1, 2027. Investors will need to pay close attention to the rules for purchasing, storing, and selling cryptocurrency.
