The developers of Cashu have issued a warning about a phishing campaign aimed at infecting Windows machines with malware. On August 20, 2026, the Cashu team reported that attackers are using a fraudulent website that mimics the official one to deceive users into downloading malicious files. Cashu emphasized that it never sends emails to its users and does not collect email addresses. They urged users not to click on suspicious links, not to download files from unsolicited communications, and to avoid running programs sent via email. Cashu is an electronic money protocol based on Chaumian blind signatures, designed to operate over the Bitcoin network, allowing the generation of digital tokens that are stored on users' devices. It is notable for its privacy in peer-to-peer transactions and instant payments with reduced fees, facilitating the conversion between e-cash and bitcoin through the Lightning network. Receiving emails on behalf of Cashu is an indication of a scam attempt.
