Bitcoin Reduces Its Difficulty for the Ninth Time in 2026
- The difficulty has accumulated a net decrease of 13.82% since January 2026.
- The hashprice fell from USD 37.39 to USD 32.21 in the first 206 days of the year.
The mining difficulty of Bitcoin was reduced again on July 25, 2026, when the network applied an adjustment of -0.74%, marking the ninth recorded drop this year. The change reduced the indicator from 127.17 trillion to 126.23 trillion and reflects a sustained decrease in the computing power connected to the network. Additionally, current estimates suggest that the next adjustment could register another reduction of over 2%, although that is still some time away.
The adjustment corresponds to block 959,616, the fifteenth difficulty recalculation performed by the network in 2026. This mechanism, which Bitcoin executes automatically every 2,016 blocks ---approximately every two weeks--- modifies the mining difficulty to maintain an average generation time close to 10 minutes for each block of transactions added to the ledger. When the hashrate decreases and blocks take longer to produce, the protocol reduces the difficulty to compensate for that loss of processing capacity.
Since the beginning of the year, Bitcoin has recorded nine downward adjustments and six upward ones. Together, the accumulated increases represent 31.04%, while the reductions reach 43.96%, resulting in a net drop of 13.82% in difficulty since January.
This evolution coincides with one of the most complex periods for the mining industry in recent years. As previously reported by CriptoNoticias, the hashrate suffered the largest recorded drop for that period since the creation of Bitcoin (17.5%) during the first half of 2026. This reduction in computing power reflects that some miners have disconnected equipment due to a decline in the profitability of the activity.
Several factors contribute to this pressure. After the halving in 2024, the reward per block was reduced to 3.125 BTC, decreasing miners' revenues. At the same time, the hashprice ---the indicator that estimates daily income per unit of computing power--- fell from 37.39 dollars to 32.21 dollars during the first 206 days of 2026, as a result of price drops from highs near 126,000 dollars to the current 64,000. Meanwhile, electricity and infrastructure costs remained high.
In parallel, some companies in the sector, such as IREN and Hut 8, began to allocate part of their electrical infrastructure and data centers to services related to artificial intelligence, a business that currently offers higher margins than Bitcoin mining. In those cases, the hardware stops participating in the processing of the network and is used for high-performance computing tasks.
It is important to note that, although the succession of downward adjustments evidences the economic pressure on miners, it does not represent a problem for the functioning of Bitcoin. On the contrary, it demonstrates that the difficulty adjustment mechanism continues to automatically adapt the network to variations in the hashrate without altering the pace of block issuance.
For now, if projections hold true and the next adjustment again reduces difficulty, the trend would confirm that the recovery of the mining sector will largely depend on an improvement in the profitability of the activity. Meanwhile, Bitcoin's ability to automatically adjust its parameters remains one of the elements that helps maintain network stability even in scenarios of significant computing power exit.
