Apple encourages employees to use their personal Apple IDs for work documents. After leaving the company, most internal permissions are revoked, but information in personal iCloud, iMessage, and unmanaged folders may still be retained, and employees can even receive update notifications. Several former employees have stated that they did not actively steal information, yet they are still able to view internal Apple documents years after their departure. This issue came to light after Apple sued OpenAI, accusing two former employees of deliberately downloading or transferring unpublished product, manufacturing process, and supply chain information, which OpenAI denies. Apple emphasizes that the lawsuit targets intentional theft of trade secrets and is unrelated to employees accidentally retaining iCloud files.
