A Decade After Losing 35% of Its Wafers, This Japanese Stock Is Back in the Quake Zone

Renesas Electronics stock has nearly returned to its pre-earthquake level, even as investors await confirmation that its Kawashiri factory restarted as planned. The Japanese chipmaker halted the Kumamoto plant after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake on July 28.

The comparison with 2016 is unusually direct. A quake at the same plant then affected 35% of its wafers and cut sales by an estimated ¥14 billion. Renesas now expects a faster recovery. The new quake tests whether a decade of resilience spending can prevent another earnings shock.

What Happened at the Kawashiri Factory

The quake struck at 16:27 local time, after Tokyo markets had closed. At Kawashiri, Renesas reported wall cracks, water leakage, and a temporary halt to its pure-water supply.

That last detail matters. Chip fabs rinse wafers with ultrapure water, so a break in supply can stop production even when power and the cleanroom hold.

Renesas said equipment and wafers still in production were under review. Its nearby Nishiki factory returned to pre-quake capacity on July 31.

The company scheduled a phased Kawashiri restart from August 5 and targeted full wafer-input capacity within about three weeks.

The 2016 Test, and Why This Time Looks Faster

A decade ago, back-to-back Kumamoto quakes affected 35% of the wafers at Kawashiri. Renesas restored full capacity 35 days after the main shock and later estimated a ¥14 billion sales hit and an ¥8 billion cut to operating income.

This time the plan is tighter. The implied target of about three weeks after an August 5 restart points to roughly 29 days, six days faster than 2016.

The company has reason to expect that. After the 2011 disaster, part of Japan's chip push, Renesas spent about ¥10 billion raising the seismic grade of plants including Kawashiri. In 2026, power, air conditioning, and the cleanroom stayed intact, and Nishiki recovered in three days.

Why Renesas Stock Is Trading Earnings, Not the Quake

The market has mostly looked past the quake. Renesas stock fell 10.45% on July 28. But that drop came before the after-hours earthquake, during a wider Asian chip selloff tied to US and Korean chip peers.

Shares slid another 8.43% on July 29, then turned. After strong Q2 results on July 31, the stock jumped 13.45% on August 3. It closed at ¥3,825 on August 10, just 1.1% below its pre-quake level.

The earnings gave investors a reason. Non-GAAP revenue rose 24.9% and operating profit rose 44.4% from a year earlier. Renesas also issued a nine-month forecast that guided to further growth, but it is unclear whether that outlook already reflects any earthquake effect.

Analysts tracked by TipRanks keep a Strong Buy consensus. Their average 12-month target of ¥5,720 sits about 49% above the August 10 close. Those ratings do not confirm the factory's condition.

Renesas is a dominant supplier of automotive microcontrollers, which raises the stakes of any disruption. It now faces a fresh legal risk too. On August 11, Navitas Semiconductor filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Renesas. That adds a courtroom overhang to the earthquake and the wider chip selloff, though the case is early and its financial impact is unknown.

The event stays a resilience test if Renesas restores full wafer-input capacity around late August without material scrappage, customer delays, or a forecast revision. It becomes a supply-chain and earnings story if the target slips, work-in-process losses emerge, or the nine-month outlook changes.
