77% of Americans Believe Including Cryptocurrency in Retirement Plans is Risky
A recent survey by the National Institute on Retirement Security (NIRS) shows that 77% of Americans believe there are risks associated with including cryptocurrency in workplace retirement plans, with 46% considering the risks to be "very high." Additionally, 53% of respondents oppose employers offering cryptocurrency investment options. The survey also revealed that 80% of respondents think the U.S. is facing a "retirement crisis," a significant increase from 67% in 2020; 61% are concerned about their financial security in retirement, 68% feel that saving for retirement has become more difficult, and 77% say debt has impacted their ability to save. The survey was conducted by Greenwald Research from October 24 to November 14, 2025, with 1,203 Americans aged 25 and older participating. Meanwhile, the U.S. government and regulatory agencies are pushing to expand the channels for including cryptocurrencies and other alternative assets in retirement accounts like 401(k)s. In March of this year, the Department of Labor proposed related rules to potentially provide a safe harbor for including alternative assets in 401(k) plans, but the proposal faced opposition from some Democratic lawmakers who argue that the volatility of crypto assets is too high and investor protections are still insufficient. This indicates that U.S. policy is gradually relaxing the channels for allocating retirement funds to crypto assets, but ordinary investors remain cautious about the associated risks.
