Today marks 12 years since the death of Harold Thomas Finney II, a Caltech graduate and prominent programmer who was one of the pioneers of blockchain technology and Bitcoin. Hal Finney created the first digital cash before Bitcoin was established, leading to speculation that he could have been Satoshi Nakamoto. Since 1992, he was an active participant in the cypherpunks mailing list and operated one of the first cryptographic remailers. On August 15, 2004, he announced the rpow.net server, which accepted tokens under a proof of work mechanism, issuing signed RSA tokens RPOW, considered the first digital cash. RPOW solved the double spending problem but required a centralized server. Four years later, Satoshi Nakamoto introduced decentralized blockchain technology. Finney was one of the first to respond to the Bitcoin whitepaper, launching a client after the release of Bitcoin v0.1. The first Bitcoin transaction took place on January 12, 2009, between Nakamoto and Finney, amounting to 10 BTC. Hal was one of the first miners, reported bugs, and reviewed code, but he stopped mining after a few dozen blocks due to computer issues. Despite his severe illness, he worked until the end of his life, becoming an icon for Bitcoin.
