The Cost of Idle USDT: What Unused Balances Miss Each Year

Key Takeaway
- USDT sitting idle on an exchange earns nothing.
- On WEEX, the same balance could earn interest through WEEX Auto Earn without being locked. As of October 19, 2026, 1,000 idle USDT misses about 48 USDT a year, and 10,000 USDT misses about 363 USDT.
How Much Idle USDT Costs You Each Year
The cost of idle USDT is the interest it would have earned in WEEX Auto Earn. As of October 19, 2026, WEEX Auto Earn pays 10% APR on the first 200 USDT and 3.5% APR from 200 to 500,000 USDT. Here is what idle balances miss:
- 500 USDT: about 30.50 USDT a year, or 2.54 a month
- 1,000 USDT: about 48.00 USDT a year, or 4.00 a month
- 2,000 USDT: about 83.00 USDT a year, or 6.92 a month
- 5,000 USDT: about 188.00 USDT a year, or 15.67 a month
- 10,000 USDT: about 363.00 USDT a year, or 30.25 a month
- 50,000 USDT: about 1,763.00 USDT a year, or 146.92 a month
These are estimates. WEEX Auto Earn rates can change.
What Stays Idle Even With Auto Earn On
Some USDT earns nothing even after you switch WEEX Auto Earn on. Margin used in open futures positions is not counted. Balances above 500,000 USDT are not counted either.
Example: a trader holds 5,000 USDT and keeps about 3,000 as margin in open positions.
- With Auto Earn off: the whole 5,000 USDT earns nothing.
- With Auto Earn on: the free 2,000 USDT earns about 83 USDT a year.
- The 3,000 USDT in positions stays idle either way.
The daily payout uses the lowest of several random balance snapshots. If you move funds out for even an hour, that day's interest drops.

How to Cut the Cost of Idle USDT
Reducing idle USDT takes a few minutes. Most of the gain comes from one switch. The rest comes from keeping your balance steady.
- Complete identity verification.
- Open the WEEX app and tap Assets, then Auto Earn.
- Switch Auto Earn on. It starts from 0.01 USDT.
- Keep spare USDT in spot or funding, not in unused open margin.
- Avoid moving large amounts out and back within the same day.
Interest is calculated hourly. Each day's interest arrives in your Funding Account at 12:00 PM (UTC+0) the next day.
When Idle USDT Is the Right Choice
Idle USDT is not always a mistake. Some users cannot use WEEX Auto Earn, and some prefer not to. It helps to know the trade-offs.
- Not available everywhere: WEEX Auto Earn is not offered in all regions.
- Needs verification: accounts without KYC cannot enable it.
- No protection for principal: interest does not protect USDT from losing its peg.
- Platform risk: USDT held on any exchange carries that platform's risk. WEEX publishes its Proof of Reserves.
The Auto Earn rules page lists which balances count. To start earning on idle USDT, turn on WEEX Auto Earn.
